Two Featured Artists Performing At The Gamble Rogers Folk Festival This Weekend!

Today’s featured artists who will be performing at the Gamble Rogers Folk Festival are:

Loudon Wainwright II

Grammy Nominee Loudon Wainwright III masterfully combines humor, wit, melancholy, anger and insight into songs which take his audiences on an emotional roller coaster ride. Loudon Wainwright III has recorded 20 albums, has been nominated for two Grammy awards and his songs have been covered by Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, and most recently by son Rufus Wainwright. He has also written commentaries and topical songs for NPR, The New York Times and ABC’s “Nightline.”

Wainwright’s storied song history has received much critical acclaim over the years.Q magazine cited him as “one of the greatest lyricists of the age.” The New York Times wrote of him, “Mr. Wainwright wrings more human truth out of his contradiction than any other songwriter of his generation.” And the New York Observer added, “Mr. Wainwright is one of the few artists who has actually gotten better as he’s gotten older.” In addition to music, Loudon has appeared in several major motion pictures & TV shows. A complete list can be found athttp://www.imdb.com/name/nm0906525/

And Janis Ian, another artist performing at the festival we feel compelled to post.

Janis Ian is a formidable talent, a force of nature. Ella Fitzgeraldcalled her “The best young singer in America”. She wrote “Stars”, which was recorded by artists as diverse as Mel Tormeand Cher; and the seminal “At Seventeen”, a song that brought her five Grammy nominations (the most any solo female artist had ever garnered). The song’s album, Between the Lines, was also a smash and hit #1 on Billboard’s Album chart. It was quickly certified Gold and later earned a ‘Platinum’ certification for sales of over one million copies sold in the US.She is also an accomplished author. “Society’s Child: My Autobiography”, has already gotten stellar reviews; O Magazine called it “Hugely readable” and recommended it as one of 27 “must-reads” this summer. Mojo Magazine gives it a four star review, and Booklist a starred review that ends with “painfully candid, and hard to put down.” She returned to the music business with 1992’s “Breaking Silence”, which immediately garnered herninth Grammy nomination.

We now have in our possession the official Gamble Volunteer T-Shirts. These T-shirts will be given to all the volunteers who have generously given of their time working the festival this weekend.

Below you will find a sneak peek of the celebrities performing this year at the festival.

Featured artist: Ralph Stanley and The Clinch Mountain Boys

After 55 years in the business, he’s still the best banjo picker and tenor singer in bluegrass music. As a recording artist, he has performed on more than 170 albums, tapes, and CDs. In 2003, he shared with his friend Jim Lauderdale a Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album. The year before that, he won Grammys for Best Country Male Vocalist Performance (beating out Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Tim McGraw, Lyle Lovett and Ryan Adams) and Album of the Year (for his part in the O Brother, Where Art Thou? collection). In 2001, he was the subject of an admiring profile in the New Yorker.

In January, 2000, Stanley became the first artist of the new millennium to be inducted into the historic Grand Ole Opry. He holds the Living Legendaward from the Library of Congress and was the first recipient of the Traditional American Music award from the National Endowment for the Humanities. One of his proudest achievements is the honorary doctorate in music Lincoln Memorial University conferred on him in 1976.
